چکیده

Recent years have seen an ever increasing interest in organic photovoltaics (OPV) [1]. As a result there is a high scientific demand for microstructural characterization of the various fabricated devices. Here we introduce several new techniques for examining OPV materials in a (scanning) transmission electron microscope (TEM/STEM) capable of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). The materials under investigation are regio-regular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) which form the most commonly used donor/acceptor blend[1].

Organic Photovoltaics: More than Ever, an Interdisciplinary Field

Despite the growing interest and rapid advancement of alternative photovoltaic (PV) technologies such as perovskite based PV devices, we still believe that organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices have a significant potential for stable, low-cost solar power generation. As a matter of fact, Heliatek announced a new organic photovoltaic world record efficiency of 13.2% in the beginning of February 201...

Using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) for Chemical Analysis of Semiconductors

The transmission electron microscope (TEM) is an invaluable tool for the characterization of crystals, polycrystalline materials, biological specimens, nanostructures etc. It provides a wide range of different imaging modes with the ability to provide information on elemental composition and electronic structure at the ultimate sensitivity, that of a single atom. Convergent beam electron diffra...

Sub-micron phase coexistence in small-molecule organic thin films revealed by infrared nano-imaging

Controlling the domain size and degree of crystallization in organic films is highly important for electronic applications such as organic photovoltaics, but suitable nanoscale mapping is very difficult. Here we apply infrared-spectroscopic nano-imaging to directly determine the local crystallinity of organic thin films with 20-nm resolution. We find that state-of-the-art pentacene films (grown...

Linking Processing Parameters and Morphological Development in Organic Photovoltaics by Energy-Filtered TEM Imaging of Model Multilayer Structures

Organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells offer a low-cost and lightweight alternative to similar solid state devices. In most cases, high efficiency OPV devices are achieved using a bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) architecture consisting of a three-dimensional (3D), interpenetrating network of donor and acceptor phases (typically a conductive polymer and a fullerene derivative, respectively) [1]. High perfor...
